Hand Carved and Painted Cottonwood Root
Koyimsi or Koyemsi (both meaning Mudhead) kachinas are perhaps the most famous of all Hopi kachinas, as they participate in almost every Hopi ceremony as clowns, interlocutors, drummers, or announcers. They play games with the Hopi and reward the winners with food and clothing. Used traditionally to pass on the beliefs of their culture, Hopi Kachina dolls are a beautiful and highly sought after Native art form.
