03 - Pueblo Pottery, Hopi Pottery: Large Jar by Priscilla Namingha Nampeyo (8.5" ht x 16")
Hand coiled clay pottery, 8 1/2 x 16 inches
A master work by Priscilla Namingha Nampeyo (1924-2008) with a small base and flaring sides. The eagle feathers design typically occurs on a flat-topped jar, with a red square surrounding the opening. The four sides of the square form the base of a design that starts with a square and goes on the the eagle feathers. Between the feathers, the design was originally a head-on view of a bird with the head in the center and the wings outstretched. It has evolved into only the wing portion, which now becomes a decorative swash. The design is an adaptation of a motif found in the Sikyatki ruins. Priscilla was a third generation descendant of Nampeyo of Hano. Her mother was Rachel Namingha Nampeyo and her grandmother was Annie Healing Nampeyo. Priscilla was also the matriarch of a family of renowned potters, including Rachel, Bonnie, Nyla and Jean Sahmie. Priscilla began making pottery when she was seven years old. When she began making pottery as a youngster she did so under the guidance of Nampeyo of Hano. She was renowned for her classic style of pottery with beautiful forms and traditional imagery. She continued using the Sikyatki revival designs taught to her by Nampeyo and is well known for her migration patterns. She was an outstanding potter and her designs were beautifully executed. (Publications: Fourteen Families in Pueblo Pottery by Rick Dillingham and Talking With The Clay by Stephen Trimble (2007) among others.) Condition note: Fine hairline crack (professionally stabilized) runs from base to shoulder.
