03 - Pueblo Pottery, Important Santa Clara Pottery: 1979 Melon Jar by Helen Shupla Signed and Dated 12-7-79 (4.75" ht x 6.5" d), 1979
Hand coiled clay pottery, 6 1/2 x 4 3/4 inches
High quality example of Helen Shupla's famous melon jar in blackware form. Helen Shupla carved the inside as well as the outside so that the clay walls were consistent across the entire wall at a time when few were making melon jars or thick-walled pots carved only on the outside. Her expertise at this style became so popular that a group of Helen Shupla's melon jar pots were selected as the cover photo of the pueblo pottery reference book "Talking with the Clay."
